New Vegetables:

September 2005: A friend in Atlanta, Georgia, Executive Director of Dryland Scope, provided me with a selection of bean seeds that were collected in the Anandwan Community located in western India in February 2005 by a friend. The collector described the species to be Vigna spp. perhaps species mungo or radiata. The indigneous Indian people called the beans urad dhal or mung dhal. Searching Goggle Images resulted in numerous photographs of the above common names and Latin names, however, none of the pictured images look like the bean seeds.

My friend planted the "parent" seeds in the late spring of 2005 at his home in Cabbagetown, a suburb of Atlanta and harvested during August and September of 2005. He estimated each vine to grow at least 30-feet or more. He noticed that at the base of each flower, two nectaries were present which attracted ants. We theorize that the plant developed the nectaries through evolution to attract ants to the plant with the ants providing protection for the plant from predators. It would be interesting to learn the Latin name of the ant or ants which protect the plants in India.

The following photographs represent the majority of the produce harvested from three small gardens at my home. Current area of production in 2005 is approximately XXX square feet. A number of different vegetables were given away to neighbors prior to photo documentation. 2006 produce will be weighed prior to consuming or giving to others to determine the amount of yields versus area in cultivation.
